Hillside Apartment is a 40-square-meter residence in Hong Kong that investigates spatial discipline through material precision and calibrated interventions. A seamless stainless steel countertop, factory-welded with an integrated sink, eliminates the need for caulk joints and mitigates the possibility of mold—an understated yet rigorous gesture. In compact urban interiors, tolerances are consequential, and craftsmanship operates as structure rather than surface.
Located in a neighborhood layered with architectural fragments from pre-war Tong Lau to contemporary towers—the project engages its context through a restrained material vocabulary. Contemporary detailing is deployed with deference to inherited textures. The layout resists accumulation, privileging spatial clarity and continuity. The re-levelling of the floor—an imperceptible act—functions as a spatial reset, absorbing variations in floor thickness to establish a consistent datum. In small-scale interiors, such precision becomes foundational.
Material articulation anchors the architectural strategy. Oak flooring introduces warmth and tactility, counterbalancing the clinical precision of stainless steel. Green-grey ceramic tiles recall the weathered patinas of Tai Hang’s vernacular facades, tying the interior to its urban memory. Pocket doors—used exclusively throughout—recede into walls, enabling fluid transitions between zones. This choreography of openings and enclosures yields a calibrated, adaptable, and quietly exacting environment.
