Auburndale Townhouse is a three-story residence in suburban Massachusetts, renovated to accommodate the evolving domestic rhythms of its young professional occupants. The program demands spatial versatility—supporting work, hosting, rest, and future growth—without relying on excess or embellishment. The intervention is measured, aligning the home’s mid-century framework with a subdued palette: off-white surfaces, light oak flooring, and minimally treated wood accents.

Two primary zones—the living area and master suite—undergo architectural reconfiguration, moving beyond cosmetic refinements to recalibrate spatial relationships.

In the living area, the kitchen is repositioned as a social anchor. Two freestanding islands introduce a non-hierarchical layout, enabling multiple modes of use—preparation, dining, gathering—without prescribing a fixed arrangement. A thickened wall conceals storage and pantry functions, removing overhead cabinetry to maintain visual continuity. Circulation is quietly choreographed, forming a transitional field between entry and communal space.

On the upper floor, the master suite is distilled to a more legible sequence. An irregular partition is replaced with a rationalized wall, enabling a fully integrated walk-in closet and uninterrupted spatial flow. At the suite’s threshold, a recessed alcove defines the entry—a spatial pause that delineates program while remaining architecturally restrained.
